English and Maths Programme
At Prospect Training Services, we know the importance of achieving English and maths qualifications up to Level 2 is an important part of a young person's journey. We recognise that for some learners, they may not be able to commit to a full-time programme; therefore, we offer a standalone English and maths programme to enable learners to improve their skills and progression opportunities.
To be eligible for this course, one or more of the categories below must apply. Learners have to:
- Combine part-time education with full-time employment
- Have a health issue that prevents them from being in education for more than a few hours a week
- Have a specific small qualification or period of work experience to progress to further education or employment

Programme at a Glance
Our English and Maths programme helps young people improve their knowledge, skills and confidence, while giving them better opportunities to progress. At the start, each learner completes an initial assessment so we can understand their individual needs. Functional Skills teaching is then adapted to suit each learner and support their learning. Pastoral support is also an important part of the programme. It helps make sure learners feel supported and have the guidance they need to achieve their potential, with targeted help and intervention where needed.
As part of the programme, learners may also have the opportunity to gain some workplace experience if they are not already employed or if they are completing more than 150 hours. A dedicated Work Placement Officer will work with local employers to find suitable opportunities and offer learners a choice of placements related to their interests.
Throughout the academic year, on our English and maths programme, learners will get the opportunity to:
Build on academic skills and achieve qualifications
Learners will work towards either Functional Skills or GCSE. The level that they will work towards will be determined through prior attainment and a Basic and Key Skills Builder (BKSB) - an online assessment system for evaluating literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.
Identify progression routes
The programme also includes sessions on progression options, career planning and CV writing. Learners are supported to plan their next steps, whether that's moving into employment, further training or continuing their education.
Be supported and be given targeted help
Pastoral support is an important part of our programme. We work closely with learners to make sure they feel supported, safe and able to succeed. Our team provides guidance with personal challenges, well-being, attendance and motivation, helping learners stay engaged and focused on their goals.
